A yet-to-be-identified man has been arrested by police in Lagos for allegedly assaulting his wife just four days after she gave birth to their baby.
The disturbing incident came to light after actress and activist Omosalewa Fafowora shared a video online showing the moment officers arrived at the couple’s home to take the suspect into custody. According to Fafowora, the woman was brutally beaten in the presence of her own mother and their newborn child, leaving her unconscious.
“News just got to me that this man brutally assaulted his wife who just gave birth four days ago. He beat her until she passed out and is in critical condition currently receiving emergency medical attention at the hospital,” Fafowora wrote on social media.
The video showed a visibly distressed elderly woman holding the newborn as police officers confirmed that the victim was hospitalized and placed on oxygen support due to the severity of the injuries.
In a swift response, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and taken into custody.
Public outrage has erupted online, with citizens demanding justice for the woman and stricter penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence, particularly against vulnerable postpartum women.
The authorities are currently conducting further investigations, while social welfare officials are reportedly providing support to the victim and her child.
