EnuguYoung Preacher Allegedly Shot Dead at Cross River Government House
Grief and outrage have trailed the death of a 22-year-old young man, Stephen Nnanna Mba, an indigene of Enugu State, who was allegedly killed by aides of the Cross River State Governor after he reportedly went to the Government House in Calabar to preach the gospel and deliver a vision he claimed to have received for the state.
According to his mother, Mrs. Mba Onyekwere Victoria, the tragic incident occurred on August 1, 2025. She alleged that her son, who would have turned 23 in November, was beaten and shot by the governor’s security aides. Despite being critically injured, he was allegedly left unattended for several hours until the Red Cross evacuated him to a hospital around 7 p.m., but he did not survive.
Mrs. Mba described her son as a peaceful and God-fearing youth, lamenting that he was treated like a criminal despite being unarmed.
“They shot him and abandoned him to die. My son was not a criminal, he only went there to preach and deliver a vision he had. Now they want to cover it up because the governor’s name is involved,” she said.
The grieving mother further revealed that the family had petitioned Zone 6 Police Headquarters over the matter. While the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) reportedly directed that the officers involved be produced, she alleged that nothing has been done due to political interference.
The family of the deceased, who hailed from Enugu State, is now calling on the Federal Government, human rights groups, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and ensure that justice is served.
“I have lost my first son after years of sacrifice. At a time I was supposed to reap the fruit of my labour, they killed him. All we want is justice,” Mrs. Mba cried.
