Renowned Nigerian dancer and choreographer, Kafayat “Kaffy” Shafau, has revealed the difficulties she faces in her love life since her divorce, saying many men avoid her because she is a single mother.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, the 45-year-old explained that potential suitors often reject her due to her status as a divorcee with two children.

“I have had someone tell me that because I am a single mother, he cannot think about dating me since I have two children,” she disclosed.

Kaffy, who was previously married to music producer and director Joseph Ameh before their split in 2022, lamented the stigma attached to divorce in society. She argued that divorced women who have healed and worked on themselves could be even better partners than those with no prior marital experience.

“What makes you think a woman that has been divorced is not the better candidate if she has worked on herself? What is the guarantee that two single people today will not be divorced tomorrow?” she asked.

The award-winning dancer also criticised the cultural obsession with marrying “fresh” partners, despite rising divorce rates globally, with statistics showing that more than 70 percent of marriages end in separation.

Reflecting on love and emotional healing, she said: “Real love brings peace, not butterflies.” Kaffy explained that she is still recovering from the anxieties of her past relationship but remains true to her principles.

“I know how responsible I am as a woman. I don’t sleep around. I don’t do casual sex,” she affirmed.
