Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has stirred controversy online following a statement he made suggesting that Nigeria’s path to greatness requires the death of certain individuals.
Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Bashir wrote:
“Nigeria can become great again. Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on context) a few certain people have to kpai to achieve this dream.”
The use of the slang “kpai” — a local euphemism for death — triggered intense backlash from Nigerians who interpreted the comment as inciting or insensitive, especially given Nigeria’s current political and economic challenges.
Reacting to the post, some users pointed fingers back at Bashir’s family.
@Undiluted_Ola fired back: “Your dad is leading in this one and definitely first that needs to make way for the new generation.”
@legendchild2019 added: “Your father must be among those that will kpai.”
The statement is even more controversial considering Bashir’s father, Nasir El-Rufai, is reportedly aligning with opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to reports, there are speculations that El-Rufai may emerge as a vice-presidential candidate to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, if he secures the presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Bashir’s post has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s political elite, generational change, and the frustrations of many young Nigerians regarding leadership and accountability.
As of the time of filing this report, Bashir has not issued a follow-up statement or clarification. His post continues to trend on social media, with many users calling for more responsible public commentary from individuals in politically influential families.
