The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered yet another major blow as Chief Abimbola Ajilesoro, the lawmaker representing Ife Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, officially announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajilesoro made the declaration on the floor of the House on Thursday, July 24, 2025. In a detailed statement released on Sunday, the Osun-born legislator attributed his decision to persistent internal crises and ideological inconsistencies within the PDP, particularly in its Osun State chapter.
“Consistency is the true foundation of trust. Either keep your promises or do not make them,” Ajilesoro stated. “The PDP leadership in Osun had made overtures toward aligning with the progressives, but internal narratives shifted along the way.”
He accused the party of creating confusion by secretly exploring alliances with the APC while maintaining a contradictory public position. According to him, such duality has eroded the trust of loyal members and left the party without a clear political direction.
“As someone who believes in political loyalty and ideological alignment, I find it untenable to remain in a party that covertly supports the opposition while presenting a contradictory public stance,” he said.
Ajilesoro’s resignation from the PDP was officially conveyed in a letter dated July 22, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ilare Ward II in Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State.
Now fully aligned with the ruling APC, the lawmaker pledged unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and promised to support the president's re-election and the success of all APC candidates.
“Loyalty to one’s party and its leadership is non-negotiable in my political ideology. I have, therefore, chosen to align fully with the progressive camp and support the re-election of President Tinubu and all the APC candidates across the board,” he affirmed.
Ajilesoro’s defection marks another significant setback for the PDP, which has been grappling with a wave of internal defections ahead of the next election cycle.
