The Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, has successfully intervened in a long-standing conflict between Fulani herders and farming communities in Nahutan, a rural community in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The intervention follows growing tensions and sporadic confrontations between the two groups over grazing rights and farmland encroachments—issues that have plagued the region for years and threatened food security, community peace, and inter-ethnic relations.
Governor Mohammed, in a peace-building visit to Nahutan, held a series of meetings with traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives of both the herders and the farmers. He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding in resolving disputes, pledging that his administration will work to provide lasting solutions to the recurring clashes.
“We cannot allow the fabric of our rural economy to be torn apart by conflict. Herders and farmers are both vital to our state’s survival and prosperity. My administration is committed to ensuring justice, fairness, and peaceful coexistence,” the governor stated.
As part of his intervention, Governor Mohammed announced the reactivation of grazing reserves and the establishment of a joint community peace committee that will mediate in disputes and recommend preventive measures. He also ordered the immediate deployment of security operatives to sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
The governor’s proactive step has been widely applauded by stakeholders, who noted that the move could serve as a model for resolving similar herder-farmer conflicts in other parts of Nigeria.
The residents of Nahutan expressed relief over the intervention and called on both parties to honor the peace pact brokered during the meeting.
The Bauchi State Government has continued to urge communities across the state to embrace dialogue and community engagement as tools for conflict resolution, reaffirming its commitment to sustaining peace and development in all local government areas.
