The Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Alhaji Ahmed Makama Hardawa, has passed away.
The sad news was confirmed in a press release issued on Wednesday by Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor of Bauchi State. According to the statement, Hardawa died on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Abuja after a brief illness.
Governor Bala Mohammed, while expressing his deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss, described the late chairman as a distinguished statesman, an accomplished public servant, and a patriotic Nigerian whose contributions to democratic development in the state and the country at large were notable.
Gidado noted that Hardawa had previously served as Resident Electoral Commissioner in Taraba and Nasarawa states, where he was lauded for his integrity, diligence, and fairness.
As Chairman of BASIEC, Hardawa played a pivotal role in advancing democratic governance at the grassroots, particularly through the promotion of transparent and credible elections. His commitment to the rule of law and institutional development, the statement added, earned him widespread respect from political stakeholders and the public.
Governor Mohammed described him as a man of wisdom, humility, and exemplary leadership, stating that his absence would be sorely felt, especially during this crucial phase of the state’s democratic journey.
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the late chairman’s family, the entire BASIEC staff, friends, associates, and the people of Hardawa and the Misau Emirate Councils.
He prayed that Almighty Allah (SWT) forgives Hardawa’s shortcomings, grants him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus, and comforts his loved ones during this time of grief.
The funeral prayer (Janazah) is scheduled to hold today, Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi, by 5:00 p.m.
