The Anambra State Police Command has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the brutal murder of a pregnant nurse from Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, whose mutilated body was recently discovered in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike, Oyi LGA of Anambra State.
In a statement issued on July 30, 2025, the Police Command confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old female suspect, Somtochukwu Nwafor, on July 25, 2025, following credible intelligence and support from members of Umueri village, Ogbunike. According to the police, the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run.
During interrogation, Somtochukwu admitted that she was called by Elobisi to clean up the blood stains after the victim, a trained nurse residing in Anambra, was lured and gruesomely murdered under the guise of a medical consultation. She also revealed that the body parts of the victim were sold to various native doctors operating within the area.
Acting on this confession, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine belonging to one Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, a native doctor from Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike, in the early hours of July 29, 2025. During the raid, the police recovered suspected human body parts concealed in cellophane bags at the shrine.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, strongly condemned the incident, labeling it "inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life." He assured that a manhunt has been launched for the fleeing prime suspect and other accomplices involved in the horrific crime.
CP Orutugu also urged the public to assist the police with credible information that could lead to further arrests, assuring that the identity of informants will be fully protected.
The Command reiterated its commitment to bringing all perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and restoring public confidence in law and order.
