Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his long-standing affiliation with the party over what he described as its failure to provide credible leadership and good governance to Nigerians.
Melaye made the announcement via a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, which he shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday. The letter, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, stated that his decision to quit the party was with immediate effect.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” the letter read in part.
The outspoken politician lamented the party’s inability to live up to its responsibilities, stating:
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Melaye’s resignation comes amid growing internal wrangling within the PDP and uncertainty about its future direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Though he did not reveal his next political move, his exit has sparked speculations about potential alignment with other political forces or a return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he previously left.
The development marks another major shakeup in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly within the opposition bloc.
