A tragic incident has shaken the Anambra State Police Command following the accidental death of Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was shot by his 10-year-old son in Awka.
According to the statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the unfortunate event occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025. The young boy, unaware that the AK-47 rifle assigned to his father was loaded, reportedly pulled the trigger, striking the officer in the back. A second child also sustained an injury to the hand during the incident.
Inspector Amechi was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead by the attending doctor. The injured child is currently responding to treatment.
The AK-47 rifle used in the incident has been recovered, and the remains of the late officer have been deposited in the mortuary. The Command expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family and friends, while also wishing the injured child a speedy recovery.
SP Ikenga assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations into the matter continue. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safe storage and handling of firearms, particularly in homes where security personnel live with young children.
