HAPPENING NOW: NANS Stops ESUT 2025 SUG Election, Cites Systemic Injustice and Intimidation

...Election Postponed Indefinitely

In a dramatic turn of events, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has indefinitely postponed its 2025 Student Union Government (SUG) election, following intense pressure and warning from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Enugu State Axis.

The development was confirmed in an official memo issued by the Registrar of the institution, Ambrose G. Ugwu, dated June 11, 2025. According to the circular (Ref: ESUT/R/C/39), the election originally scheduled to hold on Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, 2025, has been suspended until further notice. The university stated that the decision was taken based on the advice of the Enugu State Commissioner of Police on the state of the nation.

This follows a hard-hitting statement released earlier by NANS, accusing ESUT authorities of conducting an undemocratic and unjust electoral process fraught with intimidation, biased disqualification of candidates, and systemic manipulation allegedly orchestrated by the Student Affairs Department.

NANS had issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the suspension of the election and threatening a mass protest on Democracy Day, June 12, if their demands were not met. The student body also called on all ESUT students to boycott the process, describing it as an assault on student democracy and a betrayal of due process.

Key demands by NANS included the immediate withdrawal of a flawed screening report, fair hearing for disqualified candidates, and the institution of a transparent, impartial election process.

With the postponement now confirmed, it appears that student resistance led by NANS has succeeded in halting what many described as a compromised election. The outcome is being hailed by student activists as a bold stand in defense of justice, accountability, and the rights of Nigerian students.
