Wife of former Nigerian President, Dame Patience Jonathan, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling from the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
The former First Lady made this known during the institution’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony, held on Saturday. Speaking at the event, she encouraged Nigerian women and youth to pursue lifelong learning, emphasizing that age should never be a barrier to academic achievement.
“I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it,” she said.
Patience Jonathan also stressed the importance of education in retirement, noting, “Even in retirement, you are not too old to go back to school because education provides the opportunity to refresh the brain and learn new things.”
She dedicated her academic achievement to Nigerian women, reaffirming her unwavering commitment to championing the rights and welfare of vulnerable groups, especially women, children, and youth. She pledged to continue advocating for their upliftment and to promote dialogue for national development.
Reflecting on her academic journey, she expressed gratitude to God, her family, and her supporters, particularly acknowledging her husband, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, for his unwavering support and encouragement.
“First of all, I am very grateful to the Almighty God who has made today a reality. He saw me through the programme so I am very happy today. I also thank my family sincerely, especially my lovely husband, His Excellency Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan... I am also very grateful to my beautiful and lovely children for showing great understanding and love throughout the period I was engaged in this programme. I appreciate all my friends for their encouragement. I feel very happy today,” she added.
The announcement was contained in a statement released by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, on Sunday.
