Tragedy struck in Kano on Monday as Abubakar Abdullahi Likita, former Chairman of Wudil Local Government Council, slumped and died during the Janazah (funeral) prayer of his close associate, Mahmoud Sani Madakin Gini, a former Chairman of Dala Local Government Area.
The incident occurred in the midst of mourners gathered to bid farewell to Madakin Gini, who had earlier died in a car accident along the Kaduna-Abuja highway. Panic ensued as Likita collapsed mid-prayer, and despite efforts to revive him, he was confirmed dead shortly after.
According to a close associate, Abubakar Musa, Likita’s own funeral prayer has been scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 AM at his residence in Bompai, Kano.
It was gathered that Likita had arrived at the funeral alongside Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the 2023 Kano State governorship candidate. Their presence was part of a larger show of solidarity from political allies mourning the late Madakin Gini.
The double tragedy has plunged the Kano political community into deep mourning, especially among stalwarts who served during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, under whom both men held political office.
The untimely deaths of these two respected figures have sparked an outpouring of grief across Kano and beyond, as condolences continue to pour in from political leaders, traditional rulers, and the general public.
