The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Akwaji Ushie, for three months, following serious allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and financial misconduct.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was announced during the House’s plenary session on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The lawmakers acted upon a petition submitted by nine out of ten councillors from Bekwarra LGA, detailing several claims against the embattled chairman.

Acting Chairman Appointed
The Assembly has appointed the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, Hon. Egbung Odama, to serve as Acting Chairman during the 90-day suspension period.
In addition, the House directed its Judiciary and Public Petition Committees to carry out a thorough investigation and submit a comprehensive report within the stipulated period.
