A deadly assault rocked the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State, claiming the lives of two students and leaving at least four others wounded.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday evening around 8:40 p.m. at Total and Tipper junctions, was reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen who stormed the area on a motorcycle and in a black Lexus 350 SUV without license plates, opening fire indiscriminately on unsuspecting students and bystanders.
Some students of the institution who spoke to SaharaReporters on Friday said the gunmen’s indiscriminate shooting left two students dead and four others injured.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the fatalities. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that two victims, including a female, are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
“Sadly, two deaths have been recorded, and two others were allegedly abducted,” Ikenga said. “We are acting on credible intelligence and eyewitness accounts to track down the hoodlums.”
According to him, the police have deployed a heavy joint security team led by the Area Commander of Aguata to the area, and a manhunt for the attackers is underway.
SaharaReporters gathered that the joint security operation will involve the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and local vigilante groups.
Police authorities have called for calm and assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over student safety, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to prevent a recurrence.
