BREAKING: Buhari’s Former Minister Resigns from APC as Political Plot to Unseat Tinubu Thickens

In what is widely seen as a major political shakeup ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Minister of Environment under President Muhammadu Buhari, Hon. Barr. Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi, CON, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi, a notable political heavyweight in Nasarawa State and former Secretary to the State Government during the administration of Governor Tanko Al-Makura, tendered his resignation on Saturday, June 1, in a letter addressed to the APC Chairman of his Uke Ward, Karu Local Government Area. Copies of the letter were also sent to other top-ranking party officials.

While citing personal reasons for his decision, Abdullahi expressed appreciation to the APC for the platform it provided him throughout his career in public service and wished the party well in its future endeavors. However, the timing of his exit has stirred intense speculation amid growing signs of internal unrest within the ruling party.

A close associate of the former minister, Mr. Samuel Akala, revealed in Lafia that Abdullahi is currently engaged in wide consultations and is likely to join another political party soon, with a potential gubernatorial bid in 2027 looming large.

“He is consulting widely, and there is a strong possibility he will declare for another party shortly,” Akala confirmed. “He has the capacity and followership to mount a serious challenge.”

Abdullahi’s departure is viewed by political observers as a significant blow to the APC in Nasarawa State, where he enjoys considerable grassroots influence. It also comes at a time when political realignments are intensifying nationwide, fueling speculation of a growing northern political bloc seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership in the lead-up to the next presidential election.

Although no explicit link has been established between Abdullahi’s resignation and any active campaign to oust Tinubu, insiders suggest that his move may be part of a broader northern strategy to reclaim political control in 2027.

The APC is yet to issue any official statement in response to the development.

This resignation follows a series of similar moves by high-profile figures within the Buhari-era camp, including recent public criticism of Tinubu’s administration by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd.), further underscoring the deepening fractures within the ruling party.

As the 2027 elections approach, all eyes are now on Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi’s next political move, which could significantly alter the balance of power not only in Nasarawa State but potentially on the national stage.
