A tragic incident unfolded in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday night when a vehicle reportedly driven by suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys, lost control and killed six pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred around the Eliozu area, near Unity Filling Station, when the car, allegedly at high speed, veered off the road, knocked down an electric pole, and rammed into pedestrians on the walkway.
The impact of the crash resulted in the death of at least six innocent bystanders, while the two occupants of the car—the driver and a passenger believed to be either a friend or relative—survived the crash. Observers at the scene claimed the two men appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
Following the accident, the suspected Yahoo boys reportedly fled the scene, prompting a manhunt by the Rumuokoro Police Division, which arrived on site around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday and evacuated the victims using an ambulance.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding swift justice and the arrest of the fleeing suspects. Calls for increased road safety measures and a crackdown on reckless driving under the influence are also gaining traction.
As investigations continue, the Rivers State Police Command has urged anyone with useful information to come forward and assist in tracking down the suspects.
