SAD: 19 Burnt to Death in Kogi Road Crash (Bus Coming from South Heading to Abuja)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 19 persons were burnt to death and eight others injured in a tragic road crash that occurred on Sunday, May 25, along the Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State.

Kumar Tsukwam, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the crash happened around 4:00 p.m. at the Gadabiu community in the Lokoja Local Government Area.

The accident involved a Toyota Hummer bus heading to Abuja from the South and a truck, resulting from speeding and wrongful overtaking. The high-speed bus attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided head-on with the truck.

“Among the 19 burnt to death were five children,” Tsukwam said, adding that the eight survivors sustained injuries ranging from bruises, cuts, dislocations, fractures, to burns. They were immediately rushed to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment.

“This was a very unfortunate incident. Our rescue team and the police responded promptly, but sadly, 19 lives were lost due to reckless driving," he added.

He urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking while adhering strictly to traffic rules to prevent such avoidable tragedies on Nigerian roads.
