The controversy surrounding Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has deepened following the arrest of a popular social media critic known as Verydarkman (VDM), sparking public outrage and a wave of account closures.
According to reports by Gistreel, Verydarkman was arrested in Abuja by security operatives under undisclosed circumstances. However, social media speculations and unconfirmed sources have linked GTBank to his arrest, triggering widespread backlash against the financial institution.
Prior to his detention, Verydarkman had publicly criticized GTBank over what he described as unauthorized deductions from his mother’s bank account. His accusations quickly gained traction online, drawing sympathy from supporters and prompting scrutiny of the bank's practices.
In response to the unfolding events, a social media user identified as Lekan Adeyemi took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his decision to sever all ties with the bank. Adeyemi revealed that he would be closing all six of his GTBank accounts and instructed his family members to do the same.
His public statement reads:
“In solidarity with VDM & mum, I’m closing ALL my 6 accounts with GTBANK asap. By this post, I am instructing my children and family to do same. Anyone who wish to transact business with me using a GTBANK account has failed before starting. General public, please take note.”
The bold move has drawn mixed reactions online, with many applauding his show of solidarity, while others are calling for caution and a deeper understanding of the situation.
As the story continues to unfold, Guaranty Trust Bank is yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations of their involvement in the arrest or the alleged unauthorized deductions.
This incident adds to a growing list of public criticisms faced by Nigerian financial institutions in recent times, as customers increasingly demand transparency, accountability, and ethical corporate conduct.
