The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, led a delegation on a condolence visit to the family of the late National Commissioner, Major General Modibbo Alkali (Rtd). Alkali, who passed away on Monday, April 28, was honored for his significant contributions to the Commission.
On Friday, May 2, the INEC Chairman was accompanied by National Commissioners, Directors, the Secretary to the Commission, and senior aides as they visited the family residence in Kaduna to offer their respects. The delegation expressed their condolences and extended prayers for the peaceful repose of the late General’s soul.
Alkali, who served as Chairman of the Appointment, Promotion, and Discipline Committee of INEC, was praised for his pivotal role in shaping electoral personnel management and enhancing security strategies around elections. He was instrumental in ensuring the safe deployment of personnel and election materials, particularly in high-risk areas.
Alkali’s leadership in INEC’s strategic planning for electoral security was noted as a key factor in the success of many elections. The Commission recognized him as one of its most committed and hardworking members.
The late General is survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren. He was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
