FG to Launch Four Satellites for Earth Observation, National Security – Minister Nnaji

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has announced the Federal Executive Council's approval for the launch of four satellites aimed at improving Earth observation and tackling security challenges across Nigeria.

Speaking at the 22nd National Council on Innovation, Science and Technology (NCIST) held in Abuja from May 12 to May 14, 2025, Nnaji revealed that the project includes three Earth Observation satellites and one Radar Aperture satellite capable of capturing images day and night, under all weather conditions.

He emphasized that the move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at addressing national issues through technological advancement. “These satellites, worth millions of dollars, will allow the military and other agencies access to critical imagery without the need to purchase them from foreign sources,” he stated.

On policy developments, the minister noted that an inter-ministerial committee is reviewing the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy and working on instituting a National Research and Innovation Fund.

Nnaji decried the disconnect between research institutions and industry, urging for a system where innovations are nurtured from concept to commercialization. “Let this council mark the beginning of a new chapter where every research has a roadmap to industry,” he said.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, described the council meeting as a call to action to build a dynamic innovation ecosystem. She disclosed that 109 memoranda were submitted, addressing areas like indigenous research commercialization, innovation funding, and inter-agency collaboration.

Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, represented by Dr. Morris Mbaeri, commended the theme of the meeting, calling for a resilient research ecosystem to drive sustainable development.

Prof. Azikiwe Onwualu, President of the African University of Science and Technology, recommended that Nigeria increase its R&D spending to 3% of GDP and establish more RDIC clusters that integrate academia, industry, and startups.

The 22nd NCIST was initially scheduled for 2024 but postponed to 2025. Minister Nnaji assured that efforts are underway to restore the council’s regular schedule with the 23rd edition already in planning.
