A bombshell has rocked Enugu State’s political landscape as Barr. Sunday Umeha, a member of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Labour Party, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Citing the protracted crisis plaguing the Labour Party at both the national and state levels, Umeha said the situation has made it impossible for him to effectively represent his constituents. According to him, his decision to join the APC is motivated by the need to connect to the centre and attract tangible benefits to ⁰⁰ people, stating that "there are a lot of advantages in plugging to the centre."
The lawmaker also commended the APC for better serving the interests of the Igbo people than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the federal level. He pointed to ongoing landmark infrastructure projects such as the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and the Enugu-Port Harcourt road as clear indicators of the APC-led government’s commitment to the development of the South East.
Umeha’s defection marks a historic moment for the APC in Enugu State, as the party has never won a single election in the state since its formation over a decade ago. With this development, the APC now boasts an elected official in Enugu State for the first time — a move that is expected to significantly alter the state’s political dynamics.
