In a coordinated security efforts, nine individuals abducted in Eburumiri, Ibagwa-Aka, on the evening of 26th April 2025, have been safely rescued. Among the victims were two Reverend Sisters, who were taken by armed criminals aiming to instil fear within the local population.
Barrister Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, addressed the press today, expressing both his condemnation of the abduction and his gratitude for the successful rescue operation.
“The abduction of innocent persons—religious and civilian alike—is not merely a criminal offence; it is an assault on our collective dignity,” he stated.
The local government launched an immediate response, collaborating with security forces from Enugu State and neighbouring areas of Nsukka and Kogi to execute a rescue operation.
“Within 24 hours, we successfully rescued three of the abductees, and I am pleased to announce that all nine have now been reunited with their families and are receiving necessary medical evaluation and psychological support,” Ukwueze confirmed.
Highlighting the importance of community involvement in security, Ukwueze called for a collective approach:
“It is imperative that we cultivate a culture of vigilance and proactive information-sharing. Suspicious activities should no longer be overlooked,” he urged, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his swift mobilisation of resources, stating:
“The promptness of the state government’s intervention sends a strong message that criminality has no place within our borders.”
In his closing remarks, Ukwueze vowed to enhance local security measures:
“Igbo-Eze South will not tolerate criminality in any form. We will mobilise every lawful force to defend our territory.”
He announced plans for a comprehensive overhaul of local security architecture and an upcoming Local Security and Stakeholder Summit to forge sustainable community safety strategies.
“Together, we shall build a safer, stronger, and more secure Igbo-Eze South,” he concluded, urging citizens to remain vigilant and courageous in the face of adversity.
