The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the walkout staged on Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by some women loyal to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The incident occurred during the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme held in Port Harcourt, where 500 women were meant to receive support items.
Speaking from China where he is currently on official duty, Wike described the incident as a disgrace to the people of Rivers State. Through a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike apologized to the First Lady and President Bola Tinubu, labeling the behavior as shameful and disrespectful, not just to the President’s wife but also to the office of the President.
The walkout was reportedly led by some sacked local government vice chairmen.
Wike criticized supporters of the suspended governor, accusing them of embarrassing the state and warned against further disgraceful conduct. He called on Fubara to be honest and transparent about his demands to the President rather than sending mixed signals.
He stressed that true peace requires genuine actions, not mere public declarations, and condemned any covert attempts to stir chaos or disrespect the Presidency.
Wike concluded by distancing himself and his supporters from the actions taken at the event, reiterating that those involved do not represent the true values of the people of Rivers State. He again tendered an apology to the First Lady for what he termed a shameful display.
