The Anambra State Police Command has made a major breakthrough in the fight against illicit drug trafficking with the arrest of six suspects, including a female drug dealer, during a successful operation in Isuaniocha, Awka North Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by operatives attached to the Special Cultism Squad, Obosi Sector, in the early hours of Thursday, 30th May 2025, followed credible intelligence reports. During the raid, officers recovered a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be hard drugs, along with other incriminating substances.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Chinyere Onwuka (32 years), John Kennedy Onwuka (36 years), Chidiebere Onyeze (30 years), Echeazu Nonso (35 years), Osita Chukwu Chialuka (21 years), and Nnebedum Wisdom (25 years).
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of drug consumption among youths in the state. He described drugs as “the oxygen that drives most crimes and bad behaviour exhibited by individuals,” emphasizing the link between substance abuse and criminal activities.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling the menace through both enforcement and advocacy. He revealed plans to intensify the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), a proactive initiative aimed at sensitizing young people on the dangers of drug abuse and associated criminal behaviours.
“All the suspects will be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Awka, for further necessary actions,” the statement concluded.
The Anambra Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with credible information that will assist in curbing crime in the state.
