BREAKING: NLC Endorses Governor for Second Term

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State Chapter, has publicly endorsed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for a second term in office, commending his administration for prioritizing the welfare of workers and retirees.

This endorsement was made during the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Speaking at the event, the NLC Chairman in Kano, Kabiru Inuwa, described Governor Yusuf as a worker-friendly leader and applauded him for being the first governor in Nigeria to implement the new ₦71,000 minimum wage. He referred to this action as “a bold and unprecedented move” that demonstrates the governor’s commitment to easing the financial burden on workers amidst rising living costs.

Inuwa also praised the governor for consistently paying salaries and pensions on time and for clearing a ₦16 billion backlog of retirement benefits inherited from previous administrations. He highlighted the increase in the minimum monthly pension from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 as further evidence of the governor’s concern for senior citizens.

Additionally, the NLC Chairman acknowledged the recruitment of teachers, approval of staff promotions, and investments in capacity-building and training for workers, which he said have revitalized the civil service in Kano State.

Capping his remarks, Inuwa rallied the audience with the slogan “Allah ya maimaita,” which translates to “May the Almighty repeat the administration,” signaling strong labor union support for Governor Yusuf’s re-election bid.

This endorsement marks a significant show of confidence in the governor’s leadership from the labor community and underscores what they see as a new era of inclusive and responsive governance in Kano State.
