The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to fully enforce the nationwide ban on sachet alcoholic beverages starting December 31, 2025.
This confirmation came during a media briefing in Abuja, where Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, clarified that the temporary ministerial lifting of the ban is not permanent and will end by the specified date.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025. After this date, full enforcement of the ban will begin,” Azikiwe stated.
He explained that the grace period was granted to enable collaboration between manufacturers and regulators for a more effective ban implementation. He also urged the public to disregard any claims that the ban has been permanently lifted.
NAFDAC is conducting nationwide awareness campaigns, sensitising distributors and reiterating that alcohol must not be sold to individuals under 18 years of age, in line with product labeling regulations.
Azikiwe also acknowledged the support of the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria in public sensitization efforts.
The agency confirmed that sachet and small-pack alcohol products under 200ml will be phased out after December 2025, aligning with its broader goal of regulating alcohol consumption and safeguarding public health.
