A major security breach has rocked the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, as ten inmates escaped in the early hours of Friday, prompting a massive manhunt by local and federal law enforcement agencies.
According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the inmates exploited a hidden hole behind a toilet, gaining access to a neighboring cell and eventually making their way out of the facility. The escape went unnoticed for over eight hours, with jail staff only discovering the breach during a headcount at 8:30 a.m., long after the inmates had vanished into the night.
The fugitives reportedly slipped through the hole around 12:22 a.m., manipulated a cell door mechanism, and scaled the perimeter fence using blankets as makeshift climbing tools. They then fled toward the nearby interstate and railroad tracks.
Among the eight escapees still at large are individuals facing serious charges, including second-degree murder suspects Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald, and Derrick Groves.
So far, three escapees have been re-captured:
- Kendell Myles, hiding beneath a vehicle in a hotel garage.
- Robert Moody, arrested later that day (details undisclosed).
- Dkenan Dennis, apprehended near Chef Menteur Highway.
Initial confusion suggested that 11 inmates had escaped, but authorities later clarified that one inmate had been moved prior to the incident.
Sheriff Susan Hutson admitted to the delay in detection, confirming that the escape was not noticed until morning checks. The New Orleans Police Department was only informed around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
The incident has sparked a comprehensive internal investigation into possible staff negligence or complicity. Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that authorities are making progress but emphasized that significant work remains.
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the search intensifies for the remaining fugitives.
