BREAKING: FG Gives Foreigners with Expired Visas Three Months to Leave Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a firm directive to all foreigners residing in the country with expired visas, granting them a three-month grace period to exit the country without facing penalties.

This was contained in an official statement released on Friday, May 2, 2025, by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi.

According to the statement, the grace period runs until August 1, 2025, after which stringent penalties will be enforced on violators.

“A three-month grace period allows foreigners with expired visas to exit Nigeria without penalty, ending August 1st, 2025,” the NIS said.

Beginning September 2025, foreigners who overstay their visa duration will be subjected to a daily fine of $15, in addition to potential travel bans of up to five years or permanent blacklisting from entering the country.

In a related development, the Nigeria Immigration Service also announced the introduction of a new online travel documentation system for all international travelers. The system includes a mandatory landing card for inbound foreigners and an exit card for those departing Nigeria.

Both documents are accessible via the NIS portal: lecard.immigration.gov.ng.

The move is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to enhance national security, regulate migration, and ensure strict compliance with immigration laws.
