The trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja with notable procedural changes.
Presiding over the case, Justice James Omotosho granted the Federal Government’s request to shield its witnesses during testimony. The judge approved the use of protective screens for witnesses, citing security concerns owing to the sensitive nature of the trial.
The courtroom was filled with legal representation as Kanu’s defence team, led by seasoned lawyer Kanu Agabi, arrived with 22 lawyers. However, the judge ruled that only the 13 lawyers previously approved by the court would be recognised for the ongoing proceedings.
Among the defence counsel were four Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs): Audu Nunghe, Joseph Akubo, Emeka Etiaba, and Onyechi Ikpeazu. Representing the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awolowo stated that the application for witness protection had earlier been filed ex parte to ensure the safety of individuals set to testify.
Further updates and developments in the high-profile case are anticipated in the coming days as proceedings continue.
