Suspected Cultist Remanded for Hacking Man to Death

 


Akure, Ondo State | April 15, 2025 – A 25-year-old suspected cultist, Suberu Abdullahi, has been remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure for the alleged murder of one Rafiu Adedeji at Ikare Junction, Owo, in Ondo State.

Abdullahi was arraigned before Magistrate Damilola Sekoni of the Akure Magistrates’ Court by operatives of the Ondo State Amotekun Corps on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, and membership of an unlawful society.

According to the prosecution counsel, P. O. Nwafor, the suspect and other accomplices who are currently at large committed the offence on January 7, 2025, at about 7:20 a.m. when they allegedly hacked the victim to death.

The charge sheet reads in part:

“That you, Suberu Abdullahi, on January 7, 2025, at about 7:20 a.m., at Ikare Junction, Owo, in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, did unlawfully kill Rafiu Adedeji, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.”

The defendant is also accused of being a member of a proscribed cult group known as AVE, in violation of the Cultism, Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, Cap 39, Vol. 2, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In response, the defence counsel, O. Adedapo, requested an adjournment to allow time to respond to the prosecution’s application.

Magistrate Sekoni granted the request and adjourned the case until April 16, 2025, for further proceedings. Meanwhile, the defendant has been ordered to be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Facility.
