A man identified as Sharahu Haruna has been beaten to death by an irate mob in Gidan Katakare, Zamfara State, over accusations of witchcraft allegedly levelled against him by a relative.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday after tensions erupted in the community. Haruna Lawali, a relative of the deceased, had reportedly been accused of bewitching a woman named Nafisa Masa’udu.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the mob stormed Lawali’s residence demanding answers over the alleged spiritual assault. The situation escalated rapidly, and in the ensuing chaos, a Dane gun was fired, striking and killing Sharahu Haruna.
Police officers from the Birnin Magaji Division swiftly responded to the scene after being alerted. Haruna's body was later released to his family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the killing, with a focus on the role played by members of the local community.
“The role of the community in the attack is under scrutiny,” a source familiar with the matter disclosed.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, did not go through.
