PDP Sues APC Over Alleged Illegal Takeover of Party Secretariat

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has dragged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to court over what it described as an unlawful invasion and takeover of its state secretariat located at No. 49, Airport Road, Benin City.

In the suit, the PDP is asking the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining the Edo APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, and his agents from further trespassing on or disrupting activities at the secretariat. The party is also seeking over ₦900 million in damages, including ₦300 million in special damages for office equipment allegedly destroyed and stolen during the incident.

According to the PDP, the items carted away include computers, laptops, and power generators. The party insists it remains the lawful occupant of the property, having leased it from Mr. Enoma Agbontaen, a lease it says is still valid.

The suit also includes the following prayers:

  • A declaration that the violent eviction on January 16, 2025, was unlawful and amounted to trespass.
  • General damages of ₦500 million for violation of its right to quiet enjoyment of the rented property.
  • Special damages of ₦322,765,500 for equipment allegedly taken or destroyed.
  • Compensation of ₦90 million for emergency alternative office use at Etano Hotel, GRA, Benin.
  • Continued daily compensation of ₦5 million until judgment is delivered.

The PDP is also seeking an order restoring its possession and occupation of the property and a perpetual injunction against further interference by the APC.

As of press time, the APC and Mr. Tenebe are yet to respond publicly to the legal action.
