Tragedy struck in Borno State on Monday as an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, killing several travelers along the Kala-Balge to Gamboru-Ngala route.
According to eyewitness accounts, the explosion occurred when a vehicle traveling from Rann, the administrative headquarters of Kala-Balge Local Government Area, stepped on an IED planted along the road. The passengers were reportedly en route to Gamboru-Ngala when the unfortunate incident happened.
The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Speaking to newsmen, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, noted that efforts were underway to gather detailed information regarding the attack.
“I am aware that it happened. Please, I will get back to you. I am still gathering necessary information,” ASP Daso stated.
While official figures on casualties are yet to be released, local sources at the scene claimed that at least eight people, including women and children, lost their lives in the blast. Several others were also said to have sustained critical injuries and are receiving urgent medical attention.
One local source, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, described the scene as horrific, stating:
“Women and children were involved. About eight people died. Many others were badly injured.”
The tragic incident has reignited concerns about the persistent threat of improvised explosive devices in Nigeria’s northeastern region, where insurgent activities have continued despite ongoing military operations.
Security operatives have reportedly launched a manhunt in the area to apprehend those responsible, while humanitarian agencies are coordinating emergency responses to assist the victims.
