The member representing Isi-Uzo Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Eze Gabriel, has defected from the Labour Party to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Hon. Eze, who was elected under the platform of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, announced his defection on the floor of the House during plenary on Tuesday.

In the letter, which was read by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, the lawmaker expressed sadness about his decision but stated that his defection was “anchored on the existence of irreconcilable divisions, incessant crises, and factionalism within the Labour Party at the national level and within the state here in Enugu.”

“Regrettably, the party is now in a state of perpetual discord with various factions embroiled in legal battles, thereby undermining its ability to effectively serve the interests of the people,” Hon. Eze added.

He further remarked that “the Labour Party, once a beacon of hope for progressive ideals, has regrettably become synonymous with internal strife, thereby diminishing its capacity to fulfill the aspirations of the electorate.”

Hon. Eze also highlighted the recent conflicts between Barr. Abure Julius and Senator Usman Nenadi at the national level, as well as the dispute between Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera and Barr. Casmir Agbo in Enugu State, describing them as stark reminders of the party’s disunity.

He expressed his confidence that within the PDP, he would have the supportive platform needed to continue contributing to the state’s development. He also thanked his supporters for their understanding.
