Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a four-day ceasefire in Ukraine, set to commence at midnight between May 7 and May 8, and lasting until May 11, 2025.
The ceasefire is intended to coincide with the Victory in Europe (VE) Day anniversary, which marks the Allied forces' triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II. In a statement released today, the Kremlin emphasized that the temporary halt in hostilities is a gesture of remembrance and respect for the historic significance of the event.
"The decision reflects our deep respect for the sacrifices made during the Second World War and serves as an opportunity for reflection and humanitarian efforts," the statement read.
It remains unclear how Ukraine and its allies will respond to the ceasefire announcement. Analysts are watching closely to see whether the pause in fighting will hold on the ground, as previous ceasefire declarations have often been short-lived.
