In a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, it was announced:
"By virtue of the powers vested in the President by Article 32(6) of the Constitution of th Federal Republic President, the President has relieved Hon. Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari of his duties as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform. The termination of tenure takes effect from Wednesday, 23 April 2025, when Hon. Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari should have tendered his resignation. Hon. Hengari has also been withdrawn from the National Assembly."
The decision follows allegations that Hengari offered a N$230,000 bribe to a 21-year-old woman who had accused him of multiple instances of rape. According to investigations, the bribe was meant to silence the victim but ultimately led to Hengari’s arrest after the transaction was completed.
...The President of Namibia, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has dismissed the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari, following serious allegations of rape, bribery, kidnapping, and other criminal charges. The termination of his appointment took effect on Wednesday, 23 April 2025.
The ongoing police investigation has uncovered 11 criminal charges against Hengari, including rape, kidnapping, assault by threat, crimen injuria, abduction, and violations of the Immoral Practices Act. These allegations reportedly stem from incidents dating as far back as 2019, when the victim was still a minor. Hengari is accused of repeatedly raping the victim up until September 2024.
According to The Namibian newspaper, the victim, now 21 years old, has been placed under police protection and relocated to a safe house due to mental health concerns, including suicidal thoughts linked to the trauma she experienced.
Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, national police spokesperson, confirmed Hengari’s status as a suspect in the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that the matter remains active and sensitive.
Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo further disclosed that the victim, her mother, and her baby have been placed under the care of a social worker for continued support as investigations progress.
The case has sparked widespread public outrage and intensified scrutiny of public officials in Namibia, with many calling for greater accountability and the swift administration of justice.
