HAPPENING NOW!! FG Backs Ongoing Protest as Minister Set to Join Nigerians to Protest "Freedom of Expression"

Federal Government has expressed strong support for the ongoing protests led by young Nigerians, acknowledging the legitimacy of their concerns while urging peaceful conduct during demonstrations. The Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has publicly voiced his backing for the protests, stressing the importance of free expression while urging protesters to refrain from damaging national infrastructure.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Olawande responded to questions from Vanguard, noting that the government recognizes the frustration and grievances expressed by the youth. He emphasized that protests are an essential part of any democratic society, allowing citizens, especially the younger generation, to voice their concerns on national issues.

While expressing solidarity with the protesters, Olawande issued a firm warning against any actions that could escalate into violence or the destruction of public property. He highlighted that the nation’s infrastructure, built for the welfare of all citizens, should not be compromised in the name of protest.

Olawande further revealed that he would have joined the protesters had he the time, underscoring his belief in the right to protest as part of democratic engagement. He stated, “Everyone has the right to protest. In fact, if I had the time, I would join the protest myself. There is freedom of expression for all. The young people who are protesting have valid reasons—they see certain issues and feel the need to speak up. That’s why they are taking to the streets.”

However, the Minister cautioned that while protests are a valid form of expression, they must not disrupt public peace or harm infrastructure that supports the economy and the nation's progress. Olawande stated, “Yes, you have the right to speak, to come out and make your voice heard—even to stand by the roadside—but do not block the roads. Find a peaceful way to express your concerns; people will listen. If I have the opportunity, I’ll be there to speak with them as well.”

The Minister also emphasized that protests must be conducted responsibly, stressing that the government is open to dialogue and is ready to address the issues raised by protesters, but with the expectation that public order and safety be maintained.

In conclusion, while reaffirming the government's support for peaceful protest as a fundamental democratic right, Olawande made it clear that the government would not tolerate the destruction of vital infrastructure. He urged protesters to maintain discipline and continue expressing their concerns in a peaceful manner, ensuring that the demonstrations do not compromise the nation’s progress.

The Minister’s statement marks a significant moment in the ongoing national discourse, as the government aims to balance the rights of citizens to protest with the need for national stability and development.
