Gunmen Attack NSCDC Team, Kill Officer, Injure Others

An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been killed, and three others injured in an attack by unknown gunmen in the Igbomotoru community of Bayelsa State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday as the officers were returning from a clampdown operation, according to local sources cited by SaharaReporters.

NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the attack, stating:

“I’m aware but I have not received a comprehensive report about the incident. I will call you when I have a detailed report.”

This tragedy follows a series of violent incidents in the region:

  • In April 2024, three soldiers were killed in an ambush along the Nembe-Brass Road.
  • In February 2024, pirates attacked a navy patrol boat in Southern Ijaw LGA, killing two personnel.
  • In December 2023, two police officers were killed at a checkpoint in Yenagoa, sparking protests over rising insecurity.

Igbomotoru, located in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, has a history of militant activity. In March 2024, the military raided the area after linking suspects involved in the killing of 17 soldiers in Delta State’s Okuama community to the town.
