Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured the families of the 16 hunters killed in Uromi that they will receive full compensation for their loss.
During a condolence visit to Torankawa in Bunkure Local Government Area, Governor Okpebholo, accompanied by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other dignitaries, also pledged to provide cash and food donations to the bereaved families.
Expressing his anger over the tragic incident, Okpebholo vowed that justice would be served.
“We will ensure that justice is served on those responsible for this heinous act,” he stated.
Meanwhile, hundreds of family members and supporters took to the streets in a peaceful protest, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “We demand justice for the killings of our people,” “Hunters are not criminals,” and “We demand the speedy dispensation of justice in this matter.”
Protesters flooded the roads leading to Torankawa village, demanding accountability. Many hunters, armed with their hunting weapons, joined the demonstration. Some visibly agitated protesters chanted war songs and brandished weapons as the governor’s convoy passed, while local residents worked to maintain order.
The situation remains tense, with calls for swift justice growing louder.
