The Nigerian police are searching for a 36-year-old housewife, INRE Abiola Sholedolu Abiola, after she was allegedly caught engaging in a lesbian act with her 23-year-old neighbour’s daughter, Yetunde, in their Ikorodu neighbourhood.
According to Nigerian News Direct, the incident occurred in 2024 at their residence on Michael Enahoro Street, Maya, Ikorodu. Investigations revealed that Abiola, who identifies as bisexual, had been involved in same-sex relationships since her secondary school days and continued even after marriage.
Abiola’s relationship with Yetunde reportedly began after she moved to Ikorodu following her marriage. Neighbours grew suspicious of her increasing closeness with Yetunde. On the day of the incident, while alone with Yetunde in her apartment, Abiola allegedly seduced the young woman. Yetunde’s mother, returning from the market and unable to find her daughter, discovered them together and raised the alarm, attracting other residents and landlords.
Following the incident, on April 15, 2024, the local landlord association and the Baale (community leader) of Maya ordered Abiola to leave the area. After initial resistance, she fled, fearing for her life as threats of lynching intensified. Meanwhile, her husband, Babatunde, was reportedly beaten by youths demanding to know his wife’s whereabouts and is currently missing.
The case has garnered significant attention due to Nigeria’s strict laws prohibiting same-sex relationships, which can result in a 14-year prison sentence upon conviction.
The police are continuing their efforts to locate Abiola as investigations continue.
