HIV Treatment Remains Free in Government Facilities – NACA DG

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reaffirmed that HIV treatment remains free in government-approved health facilities across Nigeria. This statement comes as a response to misinformation circulating on social media, claiming that the subsidy for Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) has been withdrawn, with treatment now costing ₦250,000 per dose and ₦500,000 per month for patients.

The Director-General of NACA, Temitope Ilori, issued the clarification on Sunday, March 9, in Abuja, stating that these claims are false and misleading. She emphasized that there has been no withdrawal of funding or support from donor agencies, including PEPFAR (the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), the Global Fund, USAID, and the World Health Organization (WHO).

"We categorically state that HIV treatment in Nigeria remains free of charge at government-approved health facilities," Ilori said.

She further assured the public that NACA remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted access to HIV treatment, thanks to continuous collaboration with donor agencies. She urged Nigerians to disregard misinformation and avoid panic, adding that the agency’s priority is to sustain progress in controlling HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

Ilori also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, as it could cause unnecessary fear and hinder efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

"We encourage Nigerians to rely on verified sources for health-related information. NACA remains committed to ensuring that no person living with HIV is denied access to life-saving treatment due to misinformation or fear," she added.
