Nigerian Senate approved a bill to establish a Federal University in Imo State.
The bill, sponsored by Patrick Ndubueze, seeks to create the Federal University Okigwe in Imo State. It was read and passed for its third reading during the plenary session. The bill also includes provisions for the university’s management, administration, and other related matters.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who approved the passage of the bill, praised its sponsor. Jibrin emphasized the importance of education for national development.
He said, “Any nation, any society, any country that treats the issue of education with levity will be doomed. Of course, people are saying that we have several universities in this country, but they are not enough.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s large population and the need for more educational institutions, Jibrin stressed the importance of expanding access to education.
“We have a very strong population with promising youth, and what we have to do for them is to provide them with education so we can have the necessary human capital to drive the process of building our country. And it is through this kind of university that we can be able to do that,” Jibrin added.
