President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Prof. Kharisu Chukkol, a distinguished legal scholar and expert in criminal law.
Prof. Chukkol, the father of Abdulkarim Chukkol, the immediate past Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), passed away in Abuja on Sunday evening at the age of 79.
In a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described the late professor as a “towering figure in Nigerian legal scholarship”, recognizing his immense contributions to legal education and practice in Nigeria, particularly at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
“A native of Mayo Belwa in Adamawa State, Professor Chukkol dedicated his professional life to teaching and advancing law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,” the statement read.
The President highlighted Chukkol’s expertise in criminal law, noting that he served in various capacities at ABU, including as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of the Institute of Administration.
Legacy and Impact
Tinubu acknowledged that several prominent figures in the Nigerian legal system, including Supreme Court justices, senior advocates, and the current National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, were students of the late professor.
He further praised Prof. Chukkol’s 1988 book, "Law of Crimes in Nigeria," describing it as a “cornerstone reference for legal practitioners and scholars”.
Beyond academics, Tinubu also reflected on Chukkol’s legacy through his family, particularly his son, Abdulkarim Chukkol, who made significant contributions during his tenure at the EFCC.
Final Tribute
Concluding his tribute, the President extended prayers and condolences to Chukkol’s family, students, and the legal community.
“I urge the family, students, and all touched by Professor Chukkol’s life to find solace in his remarkable achievements and the enduring impact of his work. May Allah grant him eternal peace.”
