In a controversial interview on ARISE TV's Morning Show today, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central leveled serious allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment. She recounted an incident from December 8, 2023, when she and her husband visited Akpabio's residence in Akwa Ibom State. During the visit, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that Akpabio held her hand, led her around his house, and made inappropriate advances, even in her husband's presence.
Akpoti-Uduaghan further alleged that after rejecting Akpabio's advances, she faced political retaliation, including obstruction of her motions on the Senate floor. She specifically mentioned her motion to investigate corruption in the Ajaokuta Steel Company, which she believes was deliberately blocked by Akpabio.
In response to these allegations, Mrs. Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President, dismissed the claims as false and unfounded. She described her husband as a disciplined and respectful man, emphasizing that she was present at their residence during the alleged incident and witnessed no such misconduct.
The Senate has referred Akpoti-Uduaghan to its Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions over alleged disorderly conduct during a recent plenary session. The committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun, is expected to report its findings within two weeks.
Public reactions to these developments have been mixed, with some Nigerians calling for an independent investigation into the allegations, while others express skepticism. As the situation unfolds, the Senate faces increased scrutiny over its handling of the matter.
