Houston congressman Al Green announced Wednesday that he would file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump after comments made by the president regarding the Gaza Strip. Trump, during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, suggested that the United States take control of Gaza, with plans to redevelop the land and displace its residents to other countries. This proposal has caused alarm among Democrats and skepticism from some Republicans.
On the House floor, Green condemned Trump's comments, calling them "ethnic cleansing," particularly troubling as they came from "the most powerful person in the world." He declared, “I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun.” Green vowed to bring articles of impeachment against Trump for “dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
This would mark Green's fourth attempt to impeach Trump, following three previous unsuccessful attempts during Trump's first term. Green initially introduced articles of impeachment in 2017 and again in 2019, with each effort failing to gain traction. The third attempt was tabled by the Democratic-controlled House.
Green expressed confidence that impeachment would eventually succeed, stating, “When the people demand it, it will be done,” and emphasizing that he played a foundational role in the impeachment process before. "Nobody knows more about it than I, and I know that it’s time for us to lay the foundation again,” he added.
