A child health expert, Prof Aminu Mohammad, has raised concerns about the dangers of slapping children, particularly warning that it could lead to permanent hearing loss. Prof Mohammad explained that repeated slapping, especially on or near the ears, can cause significant damage to the eardrums, potentially resulting in deafness.
This warning comes after a viral video surfaced showing a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, physically assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitots International School in Ikorodu, Lagos. In the footage, Nwadigo is seen slapping the child, identified as Abayomi Micheal, during a writing lesson.
Mrs Adenike Okunlaya, the mother of another pupil, claimed her child’s ear had been affected by similar repeated slaps from the teacher. This claim was corroborated by Prof Mohammad, who highlighted the immediate harm that slapping could cause to the ear. He explained that the force of a slap could rupture the eardrum, with long-term consequences if done frequently.
Beyond hearing loss, slapping can also cause neck and head trauma, including contusions, which occur when the brain shifts suddenly within the skull. This can lead to serious injuries like brain damage or unconsciousness. Additionally, slapping may result in whiplash injuries to the neck, potentially damaging the spinal cord and leading to paralysis if not treated properly. Prof Mohammad also pointed out that slapping could cause dental issues, including the loss of teeth.
The paediatrician emphasized the importance of using positive reinforcement and effective communication as alternatives to physical punishment when teaching children.
