The Executive Director of the Heroine Women Foundation and President of Women Support Women for Human Development and Mentorship (WOSUWO), Ambassador Onyinye Mamah, has expressed profound appreciation to Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his groundbreaking appointment of Mrs. Ngozi Silverline Egbo as the Clerk of the Enugu State House of Assembly.
Ambassador Mamah, in a statement issued shortly after the announcement, hailed the move as a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the participation of women in leadership and governance in Enugu State. According to her, this appointment marks the first time in the history of democratic governance in the state that a woman has been appointed to the prestigious position of Clerk of the House of Assembly.
"This is a significant and historic moment for women in Enugu State," Mamah said. "For the first time, a woman has been entrusted with such a vital leadership position in our state's legislative body. Governor Mbah has shown exceptional foresight in recognizing the potential of women to lead and contribute meaningfully to the development of our society."
Ambassador Mamah also noted that the Governor's decision to appoint a woman to this key role aligns with the promises made during the recent town hall meetings, where issues surrounding the Affirmative Action and women's participation in leadership positions were discussed.
"Just a few weeks ago, during the Governor’s town hall meetings, women’s groups, including ours, advocated for more inclusive leadership, particularly in decision-making roles," Mamah continued. "It is with great joy that we see Governor Mbah not only listening to our concerns but acting decisively to ensure that women’s voices are heard at the highest levels of governance. This appointment of Mrs. Egbo is a testament to that commitment."
The Heroine Women Foundation and WOSUWO President further emphasized the significance of this appointment for future generations of women in Enugu State. She stressed that it signals the beginning of more women assuming influential roles across all sectors of governance and public service in the state. "With this historic appointment, we anticipate that more credible and competent women will be brought into leadership positions in the coming years," Mamah said.
The women’s leader expressed confidence that Mrs. Egbo would excel in her new role and serve as a source of inspiration for many women and girls in the state. She further extended her prayers for the Governor’s continued success, asking for God's blessings on his leadership and the new Clerk of the House.
"We pray that God grants Governor Mbah the wisdom to continue his progressive agenda for the state and that Mrs. Ngozi Egbo is blessed with the strength and grace to excel in this important office," Ambassador Mamah concluded.
Mrs. Egbo’s appointment, which takes effect from Thursday, January 2, 2025, is seen as a positive step in the quest to ensure greater gender equality and representation in the governance of Enugu State.
