In a powerful address, Mrs. Lilian Ujunwa Chinweze, Vice President of AWGA and Deputy Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, delivered the keynote lecture titled “From Vision to Victory: Women Inspiring the Next Generation.” Her message was clear: women must not only dream but also take concrete steps towards realizing their dreams to inspire the next generation of leaders.
The assembly threw its weight behind the current governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, endorsing him for a second term in the 2025 gubernatorial elections. AWGA expressed appreciation for the governor’s commitment to women’s welfare and his policies that have promoted skill acquisition and economic empowerment, notably the "1 Youth, 2 Skills" program that has helped many young people acquire gainful employment and entrepreneurial skills.
"We are proud to stand behind Governor Soludo as he continues to prioritize women’s empowerment and inclusivity in governance," said Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke, the founder and president of AWGA. "His commitment to training youths, especially women, to succeed in today’s competitive world is a model for others to follow."
Nweke also thanked the Mayor of Dunukofia LGA Hon. Barr. Chijioke Ozumba for his Commitment to Women's Welfare and inclusiveness in the local government system.
AWGA extended its gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing women to key positions in his cabinet, including Amb. Bianca Odinaka Ojukwu, the newly appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs who is the Matron of Anambra Women General Assembly. The assembly also commended Governor Soludo and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for their inclusive leadership, ensuring women are well represented in their respective administrations.
“We thank President Tinubu for prioritizing women’s inclusion irrespective of political affiliations. We also recognize Governor Mbah of Enugu State for his commitment to gender equality, a stance we strongly support. The same goes for our very own Governor Soludo, whose inclusive governance continues to empower women across Anambra,” Amb. Nweke noted.
The overarching message of the AWGA was the need for total inclusiveness in society, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation. "We are one, irrespective of our ethnicity or religion," said Mrs. Chinweze, emphasizing the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence and promoting inclusivity in governance. "Let us stand up for good governance, ensuring that all citizens, especially women, have the opportunity to participate in political and leadership processes."
AWGA members gathered to celebrate the achievements of women in various sectors, from politics to education, health, and business. The assembly also recognized the critical role of mentorship in fostering the next generation of women leaders. As Mrs. Chinweze pointed out, "Mentorship is crucial. We need more than role models; we need mentors who walk beside us, guide us, and support us to overcome societal barriers."
The importance of education and skill acquisition was a recurring theme. AWGA pledged to expand its initiatives to provide more women with the tools and knowledge to succeed in an evolving world. “Education is power, and we must continue to create pathways for girls to access quality education and professional training,” said Amb. Nweke.
As part of its continued commitment to women’s rights, AWGA called for more policies that promote gender equity, especially in education, healthcare, and governance. They also urged the government to implement stronger measures to combat gender-based violence and discrimination.
In her address, Mrs. Chinweze encouraged all women to embrace their unique talents and contribute to the collective success of society. "When one woman rises, we all rise. Together, we are stronger, and our collective victory lies in transforming our communities and empowering the next generation of women," she stated.
AWGA remains dedicated to its mission of empowering women and youth across Anambra and beyond. The organization seeks to promote the health and welfare of women and children, advocate against gender-based violence, human trafficking, and drug abuse, and ensure access to clean water and sanitation services for all.
“The future of our state and our country lies in the hands of the next generation of women. If we stay focused on our vision, continue to inspire, and build paths to victory, we will ensure that the next generation inherits a world of limitless opportunities,” said Amb. Nweke.
The Anambra Women’s General Assembly (AWGA) is a socio-cultural and Non-partisangroup founded to advocate for the inclusion of Anambra women in the political and governance processes of the states where they reside. AWGA seeks to address the systemic exclusion of women, especially those from Anambra, living in other states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Through its advocacy, AWGA promotes women’s participation in leadership, education, and skill acquisition programs.
With a focus on creating an egalitarian society for all, AWGA’s objectives include promoting women’s rights, gender equality, and access to education, while also advocating for the inclusion of non-indigenous women, youth, and men in the political processes of the states where they reside.
As the assembly concluded, members were reminded that the journey to equality and empowerment is ongoing, and each individual has a role to play in realizing a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
