RANGERS ATTACK: Plateau United Penalized N4.74 Million, Deducted 3 Points and 3 Goals NPFL Due to Fan Violence

Plateau United has been heavily penalized with a N4.74 million fine, a three-point deduction, and a loss of three goals following a violent incident involving their supporters. The altercation took place during their match against Enugu Rangers on matchday 11 at the New Jos Stadium, ending in a goalless draw.

The disturbance began as fans attacked the visiting team’s players and officials, leaving a Rangers player requiring medical assistance. The violence also extended to the referees, who were not spared from the supporters’ aggression. In response, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) disciplinary committee convened promptly to address the incident and issued a firm ruling.

According to a statement from the committee, Plateau United was found guilty of violating the NPFL Frameworks & Rules due to inadequate security measures. "Plateau United failed to provide adequate and effective security, resulting in attacks on match officials and the visiting team, Rangers International. Supporters of Plateau United threw objects towards the field, injuring a match official," the statement read. The disciplinary committee emphasized that the actions of Plateau United’s fans could tarnish the image of Nigerian football.

The penalties include a three-point and three-goal deduction from the club’s accumulated points and goals, serving as an immediate consequence of the misconduct. Additionally, Plateau United faces a financial penalty totaling N4.74 million, including N1 million for insufficient security, another N1 million for objects thrown onto the field, and N1 million for the supporters' misconduct. An additional N500,000 will be allocated as compensation for match official Zakari Aminu and Rangers player Daniel Onyia, both of whom suffered physical injuries.

As part of the sanctions, Plateau United will be required to play their next three home games behind closed doors. The club has been given a 48-hour window to appeal the committee's decision if they choose to challenge the sanctions.
